Over the last 20 years, Australia has seen a surge in exports for quality beef products into Asia. With an ever-increasing affluent middle class, demand from two key markets, China and Indonesia, has seen a 72% increase in product shipped to market. This exceeds the still impressive 58% increase in global consumption over the last 20 years, or 360 million tonnes consumed annually, as reported by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.
Based on these statistics, the red meat industry plays an important part to the contribution of the Australian economy and contributes $17.6 billion to the national GDP as mentioned by Meat & Livestock Australia. So then, how do we develop or adopt innovative solutions within the cold chain sector to keep up with demand, but most importantly, ensure integrity, brand value, and quality of these high value perishable foods?
There are numerous challenges within the process of transporting from source to market, including certainty of proper cold storage protocols; possible inferior product substitution; and packaging damage through improper handling or shock. One such example is popular, bone-in meat products, which if roughly handled, the bone may puncture the packaging and increase the risk of spoilage. A solution to these issues needs to accurately track environmental conditions such as location, temperature, shock, and light, and provide all stakeholders with valuable data on where goods are within the supply chain and their condition in near real-time.
Additionally, Unit Load Devices (ULD) are an important asset to the logistics sector as it enables large quantities of goods to be transported by air freight in one single load. ULD containers transporting fresh produce is a quick and cost-effective solution, resulting in enhanced product quality and a substantial reduction in time to market.
In 2021, Singapore Airlines became the first South East Asian airline to be granted the IATA CEIV Fresh certification. They have launched “THRUFRESH” a service which transports time and temperature sensitive perishables with speed and dependability. As Singapore is a major hub for the transport of perishable goods, their CEIV Fresh certification will provide perishable distributers confidence that their cold chain logistics needs are met. IoT enabled environmental tracking solutions applied to a ULD can allow complete visibility into the entire supply chain process, ensuring compliance measures are achieved.
Adapt Ideations’ IoT enabled asset tracking and monitoring solutions enables vital data to be collected. Companies can utilise asset tracking and monitoring solutions such as Adapt Ideations’ KELVIN suite of devices and PIXEL to gain valuable data.
KELVIN M200 monitors location, temperature, shock and light and relays data in near real-time. Data collected from innovative IoT enabled asset tracking and monitoring solutions can transform business operations entirely.
Adapt Ideations' PIXEL W100 monitors temperature and humidity for cold storage to ensure the efficacy of perishable goods is maintained. Adapt Ideations solutions allows data to be shared with relevant stakeholders in our client’s supply chain allowing greater transparency to be achieved. Adapt Ideations’ IoT enabled solutions empower the effective and safe transport of temperature sensitive and high value consignments for companies transporting perishable goods.
